«Травяная вдова», т. е. соломенная вдова. Раньше выражение означало незамужнюю женщину, которая родила ребёнка. Сейчас оно обозначает жену, которая временно рассталась с мужем в связи с выполнением им служебных обязанностей. Есть также и grass widowers (соломенные вдовцы). В Индии во времена Британской империи в период летней жары жён и детей колониальных чиновников переселяли в горы, где температура была гораздо ниже, и даже сохранялась ещё не выжженная солнцем трава (grass), а мужьям, конечно, приходилось терпеть неприятные климатические условия на работе. Таких жён называли grass widows. -
